Post LeRev's Awesome Idea  Reply with quote
Rev posted a little in the other thread on his idea, but I'll let him explain it on his own. I just wanted to offer a few of my own ideas if we decide we want to go with the cafe for anarchists thing.

Anyways, some suggestions,

1. Being an infoshop instead of just restaurant could help our cause and draw in more anarchists.
2. Along the infoshop idea, I had an idea that related to my studying to be a journalist. I would love to produce a small mini-rag for the anarchist movement down in Las Vegas, if we did this shop thing. I wouldn't report ON the anarchists but on things of interest to them--police, government, etc. A locally produced for anarchists/activists rag would be useful for them, I think--especially when they can come in and meet me face to face. That would, I think, help define us among the anarchist community and draw more in, plus help out. The only problem I can think of is that police and government officials won't talk to a journalist unless they're from a known newspaper. So working at a newspaper would not only bring in some extra money regardless of whether the shop is doing well or not, but allow me to present myself as a journalist for a known newspaper in order to get that information and then publish a mini-rag under a pen name.
3. We should compost all leftovers and sell it, or use it and try to grow our own food (does anything even grow in Nevada??)
I had more ideas but I forgot them.
Embarassed

Charles, myself, and several others want to get an indymedia set up. I think the structure of indymedia is a bit restrictive to enter into and not very helpful, but you get the idea. They want to get out a daily, weekly, monthly, periodically something as well as news, etc.

I think that'd be a great niche for you, Yvette, and anybody else that is interested in that sort of thing.

Do you think it would actually help, though?

& what do you mean by indymedia exactly?

From my brief stay in Madison, WI a while back, I have a space in my heart for small coffeshops with comfortable, laid-back atmospheres.  I've always wanted to start one.  It's less work than a full-scale restaurant (or so I think, at least), but just as good, if not better.

Other suggestions, along the lines of composting, is running a small cooking oil refinery.  That is, getting used cooking oil from local places (I'd imagine that more places than restaurants use cooking oil in Vegas, casinos esp.) and refining it to be used in diesel cars (remember Mythbusters?  Used cooking oil can be substituted for diesel without any engine modifications).

And I may not be a journalist, but I'd be glad to do other work for a paper.

I like cafes better as well. In downtown they have  alot of little coffeeshops/mini-restaurants with lots of couches, free internet, music, rooms to talk, etc. I'd love that.

There's a place here in Caldwell, a bit country-like, but it's a cafe and restaurant that is small and cute. We could very easily also divide the place up into a cafe area and restaurant area with artificial partitions stuffed full of recycled styrofoam (meaning we get styrofoam, clean it, and stuff it in between two partitions) as a sound barrier.

Oh, and another thought. All of our leftover food that needs to be used or eaten can be given to the local (and growing) FNB.
