Post Land division  Reply with quote
So, turns out that an acre yields ALOT of food so how should we bread up the land?  According to my calculation 1 acre of corn can sustain 10 people for a year calorie wise.  So here's what I propose.

1 acre sweet corn
1 acre milling corn
1 acre potatoes
1 acre wheat
this alone could sustain 30-40 people but would be bland so...
2 acres of vegetables
2 acres of green houses for herbs and more vegetables
2 acre of orchards

Now it's delicious and will yield more then enough food for 40 people

6 acres of buildings, flowers gardens, & what ever we want basically

the other 10? Well we can plant that as well to sell or give away the food but we really don't need to.

What do guys think?

I don't think food will/should be the only thing taking up land. Also, we have to make sure that we can actually plant on all of these acres. Will each acre be completely useable? We should take into account:

-"Roads" since we don't want to walk on the plants Very Happy...1/2 acre total? 1 acre?
-The main housing/commune area...1 acre?
-Extra space so its not cramped and there's room to add or change things, plus fencing...maybe 1 acre total?
-Garden as suggested by LeReveur, 1/2 acre?
-Unusable space...like trees or forests we may not want to move, rocky areas, space too close to other property or main roads, etc

I would set aside as much as 2-4 acres for the housing/commune area (this includes such things as exercise area, etc).  That gives us plenty of room for expansion, especially if we eventually decide to build a complex.

What's the milling corn for?

I like the greenhouses idea.

So really let's say we only have about 20 acres for growing food?

You mill corn or wheat to make meals and flours.
