i am feeling really lazy right now, but does anyone want to read this:
http://www.generac.com/PublicPDFs/0173720SBY.pdf
i think it has some of the information we need.

also, it appears that automotive alternators are meant to run at ~ 2000-10,000 rpm
this resource seems useful also:

I was actually just thinking about how natural gas is more efficient than most power sources... Somebody mentioned burning wood to ventilate via heat, but gas is better to cook with, ventilate with, power with, etc...

Basically, though, all this really says is how alternators work, how to connect one to a battery, that running an alternator set to power a certain amount won't do you any good by running faster, and if you optimize an alternator set for a high power to higher frequencies you get longer life, better output, higher efficiency, etc.

what are the odds of actually getting natural gas?
and we don't really want to be polluting in our use of the land.

gas lines typically run all around, so getting connected to the system shouldn't be too hard. And natural gas burns completely clean, so far as I know.

All around, except not straight through farm land.  They wouldn't have natural gas lines going through there because then the farming machinery would tear them up.

natural gas is just another hydrocarbon, which means that it burns to form water and co2.
so does everything else, unless it is impure. It usually is.

charcoal can be burned too...
I know what you mean, but if you fully burn a peice of wood you get about .5% of its volume in ash.
