I have a co-worker who might donate several solar-powered lanterns.  He has a couple that are pretty big, about half the size of a person.  They can even charge during the day and be used at night.

i wonder if its hard to seperate the panel from light?
so that the panel is above ground and the light with batteries below.

If we could do what vov suggested those would be really good and if we can't they still might be worth having

late night party light source!

and even if you "can't" do that, the pieces of plastic can still be separated...
if you're gentle enough you can have an awesome hackjob that works.(like mah radio...)
its really not that difficult to seperate the stuff, expecially when its not signal carrying, it won't matter
how ugly my soldering is...
just run a wire between them

But how would we run the wire from above ground to underground?

Sink a sharpened, very thin, pvc tube down from the surface.  Then either leave it there or remove it as you see fit.

It might be worthwhile to design a system for sinking small - medium sized holes.  We'll probably need a lot of them!

Won't we reduce the efficiency if we have it running through too much wire?

Simple answer: yes.  More appropriate answer: how else would you do this?  Perhaps route all electricity generation to a large bank of batteries (or some such thing), and then draw everything off of that?

sure you'll get resistance, but at less than about 100 feet of wire, its neglidgble

BY THE WAY:
does anyone know the optimal rpm for alternators?
i am pretty sure its not 150,000 rpm. turbojets are fun  Laughing

Since wind power is the only thing we've really agreed upon, does anybody know anything about actually obtaining some and how much output we could expect from them on a windy day?

Also, I think it would be wise to minimize our power usage as much as possible, so can we agree on power essentials (light being one, and if we're underground, pumps and ventilation being another, etc.)?
