Iowa's a windy place...

For sunny days: fresnel lens.

For overcast days (which will usually mean wind): wind turbines.

Good deal.

A Fresnel lens focuses light, thats it, how does that give you power.
And NO, you're not gonna build a steam turbine generator from scrap.

I have little knowledge of mechanics and electricity, so I'm just throwing this out there. If I'm a noob... well, I'm a noob.

Copper chamber filled with water with fresnel lens above it. Tube leading out that allows steam to escape and pressure valve of some sort that will only vent when pressure builds to a certain point. Then apply the same principle you would with a water-wheel or windmill and you could generate a small amount of electricity. Think of it as a very bulky way of powering a light when low on firewood! Razz  That, and maybe we should just learn how to construct magnetos and dynamos.

So it looks like we're down to wind?

you were pretty accurate up until the comparing it to a water wheel part.  A steam turbine is like a reverse jet engine.  It's a bunch of densely packed many bladed propellers.

lets look into something more similar to a piston engine, where the air (steam) CAN NOT leave without moving the component, as it can just blow around fan blades...

and, i dont know how to solder copper pipe...

i know its called "capillary soldering" though... i think it relies on the capillary action to pull the solder in between the pipes.

seems interesting...
what about cutting open a barrel into something like:
   (      <-- half of barrel
    0    <--  shaft
      )   <-- half of barrel
would this even work?

Probably, two barrels might work better though.
