While personally I don't feel comfortable teaching pure knowledge, I would be glad to teach skills.

Before I say anything, this is me: I'm majoring in History, I'm pre-med, and minoring in education and Asian-studies.  I've taken two years of Latin, one of Greek, I'm studying Japanese, and I plan on picking up a few other languages along the way in the next decade.  I have also had the oppurtunity to take piano on and off for the last 6 years (I've moved around the country a lot).

Considering the size of the commune, the population of uneducated individuals is going to be very small indeed, which is perferable.  But, how many people are we talking about?  With very few we cold quite possibly use an apprenticeship style teaching method for most things which is fairly ideal.  Or are we thinking high numbers?  The method of teaching neccessary changes drastically.  Other things to take into consideration are what exactly would we promote in education?  Would we put an emphasis on the Arts or Languages?  Sciences?  Which histories do we obligate students to know? Etc.

Knowledge is a good thing, when its not filled with additional crap.

I for one, enjoy taking college level physics. No, not AP classes, my friend's dad teaches.
There is some pure knowledge that has to be taught.

I think that one area we should emphasize in teaching is the skills needed to survive.  Growing and preparing food, making clothing, etc.  Give people a skill base they can use to pull away from the global corporate Beast.

Also, I'm almost fluent in Spanish, and I'm hoping to start ASL (american sign language) fairly soon.  So I think we're set on languages.  Very Happy

I think we need to decide whether we're teaching knowledge, such as history or physics, or skills, such as languages or music.  Personally, I think we should teach skills over knowledge, as skills are much more valuable than pure knowledge.  Also, skill are, in a way, easier to teach, since people have a tendency to remember skills more than knowledge.

How about applied knowledge as well? If you learn something pure knowledge, you should be able to apply it immediately afterward to something in order to see its efficacy or necessity?

And personally, I like some of the pure knowledge stuff, but that mostly falls into the realms of psych (understanding people) and english (understanding communication). But really, I think we should ourselves gather what knowledge we are interested in and then catalogue it somehow (like: we know this, we might be able to teach you some). Then we can teach what we are interested in (which makes our teaching better if we have mastery over the subject) and we can teach it specifically to people interested in it.

However, we may also want to offer lower-level education, but if we do that we should probably do it Montesorri (sp?) style, which seems to be most conducive with our personal ideals.

Huh.  I guess I put this into the skills category.  I figure, if you can use it, it's not pure knowledge.  Quantum Mechanics, on the other hand...

Ummm... I hate to do this, but physics and math are gonna have to go there as well...

Not really.  Basic algebra, maybe.  But Calculus?  No.  Discrete Math?  No.  And on and on.

As for physics, there's really nothing there that we'd really use.  Maybe the temperature/heat transfer stuff, for insulating houses.  But honestly, the stuff I've gotten from my Physics classes doesn't really have an application that I've come up against.

The thing is... most of what they teach you in any physics class.... SHOULD be common sense...

Physics does become handy when it comes to architecture and engineering, especially if you want to maximize efficiency, etc...
