I don't think it will be hard to push given that how we pay our people is up to us, and room and board can be listed as payment. The monetary value can be listed as little to nothing. Again though, I plan to run this through a lawyer or several in the state we end up deciding upon.

I can't think of a more expensive source of information.  Rolling Eyes

I couldn't agree more. As it stands now, though, I'll go back over the 501(c)(3) laws and see what things do and don't apply to us. If I remember correctly, we will have to file with the state of our choosing and go past a board of some sort to get approval, and if they don't approve us, we can probably get a lawyer. That sort of thing seems to get court approval on some level more easily if the state is unfriendly. It's also worth our while to start talking with state figures involved and getting friendly, lol.

And if we're doing advocacy things, we need to look into states in which the laws favoring victims are less than favorable if we want to do the most good. So, states that like non-profits and aren't very strict against rapists, abusers, etc.?

Also, if we start out urban, start our 501(c)(3), and then acquire property for housing both commune members and people seeking sanctuary, we can transition from urban A to urban B? Having an office/headquarters that is not where we live might also be nice, and cheap is good.
