Post Homesteads instead?  Reply with quote
I've bee thinking about land division, individuality, and the buildings.  And here's the solution I've devised.  How about we have homesteads? Each of 28 would get 3/4 of an acre (21 acres). Then there would be one acre for communal buildings and greenspace, and four acres of wetlands.  We wouldn't be completely isolated though.  We would still have community get togethers and communal projects.  We should also have certain rules in place so that no one uses their land destructively.  I just think that it would be best if we each managed our own housing and food production because it's hard to get everyone to agree on that.

Eh, I don't really like the idea. It creates more separation and gives the idea of property, instead of sharing everything. I prefer what we currently have much more.

My thoughts exactly.

come on now... commune, communism. The idea is that we do live as one, and do share, rather than trying to seperate ourselves.

I don't mean we'd be separated or divided.  We'd still support each other and share. We would just be allowed to control our own lives more.  Instead of having to come up with housing plan that everyone likes we would just let people chose what kind of house they want, though we would likely help with the building.  Instead of coming up with a comprehensive plan of which vegetables to grow and in what amounts so that every one is happy we would let people plant their own garden with what they want in it.  Though, if that person were unable to work for some period of time we would all help them out.

It seems like that kind of idea would lead to conflicts with sharing/hoarding food, etc.

However, on the flip side, if we decide to go the one-large-garden route, we may run into problems with freeloaders, people who eat the product, but don't put in any work.

In my opinion, homesteads will foster separation among members.

What if we laid out the commune in such a way that we could try both?  That is, try one approach, then if it isn't working try the other.  If neither work, we can just come up with another plan altogether.

what if... we give each member a SMALL amount of land, maybe like 1/4 of an acre to call their own and do whatever with, setting up their house however they like, and such. And still have our kitchens/fields/main areas be shared. Make the home a place used only for sleep or privacy. but as far as a feeling of shelter, as a community we should have that everywhere.

I'd be ok with that proposal.

I like that.  But I also want to propose that we accept the idea/practice of being able to start over from scratch if something isn't working, rather than trying to build on/change the current system.

I hope we'd be able to. It would be bad if we ended up getting bogged down in tradition just like most societies.
