Back to the original question though.  Do we need water softeners? They seem like a luxury and they require 300-400 watts an hour.

"Softened water can require less soap, detergent or shampoo to adequately lather and clean.
It also is less likely to cause spotting on dishes, and it can reduce scaly lime and mineral
deposits on sinks and showers. From a long-term standpoint, soft water can increase the life
span of household pipes and appliances by reducing harmful lime deposits."

Those are the main reasons for having softened water.  It's up to us to decide whether or not to go with one.

I would probably suggest starting without one.

$40 bucks to shove specialized NdFeB magnets on the pipe. FFS it doesn't consume power.

Post I really want to make a note about the computer/TV topic Reply with quote
Hi i really don't understand why anyone of a new or just starting commune would want more then say 2 computers for use by the entire commune to begin with. i mean lets think about it how much time are we going to have FREE from work/chores???

I understand none of us want to live back in the stone ages being this is the 21st Century.
But we have to be real about even stuff that seems as small as this.

but then i think hmmm can you pedal enough to generate power to use a computer
or watch TV? that to me would be more fare to everyone then say one or two members only use the computer cause they know how but using everyones allowed elec. yet getting to relax more then others.  etc.

Such system can be created cheaply and easily.

@yurchardonnay: as for computers, we're looking to probably start out as an urban endeavour and accumulate resources (liquid and physical capital, for lack of a better word), then move into a rural setting. If we want to maximize the amount we accumulate it would be worthwhile to put everything on power-strips (surge protectors) and flip the switches off when the electronics plugged into it are not actually in use, thus saving power, and it then it won't matter how many computers we have. Seeing as how most of us have been posting and communicating from home, or so it would seem, we have an abundance of computers and maintaining possession of them seems logical.

As for water softeners, if the water in the area isn't too hard and we apply filters, I'm not picky, but the whole extended lifetime for pipes sounds spiffy. I honestly don't care about the convenience of dishes or stuff like that, I plan to do things by hand, and other conveniences seem a bit.... unneccesary, so the only argument I see standing is extended lifetime for pipes. Perhaps it would be good to ask the locals in the area about their pipes and the water quality?

Oh, and off-topic: land is for sale in the desert (mojave area) for $500 an acre.

I don't think we're going to be able to do much with a desert. ;P

can you output the 400-500 watts it takes to drive a decent modern computer?
