Post Layout and measurements  Reply with quote
We need to decide on the layout for the houses and dimensions as soon as we can. We also need to figure out how much space we want between the houses, if we want it in a definitive semicircle, etc.

I had a friend do the math for me, and here's what I got for the 6 20x40s:

If we have the houses perpendicular and the arc of the semicircle is circumscribed, then with 6 20x40 houses we have an inside radius of 78.63702 ft and an outside radius of 97.5554 ft if the houses only touch on the inside corner for each house. The total area would be 15072.23 sq ft and the inside are would be 9713.453 ft. The total sq ft for all the houses combined is 4800 sq ft, which is 6 houses at 800 sq ft. This means we'd be taking 1/3rd of an acre for GOOD house sizes. and remember, if we do 2 floors, we double the sq ft of the houses.

If we minimize the space, it changes VERY slightly, so it's almost negligible. The question becomes whether or not we want the more enclosed feeling of the houses being perpendicular to the diameter or not. If not, it becomes 77.27 inside radius, 97.27 outside radius, 9379.67 sq ft inside area and 14863.37 sq ft total area with the same house sizes.

However, if we widen the arc of the semicircle and either neither spread out nor increase the number of houses, so that the enclosed area is less and it isn't a full semicircle, we'll increase the amount of light we take in to harvest passively and actively, so that's something to consider.

We can do this for any floorplan and any size, but here's what I think we should do. Plan out several plans and go for the biggest and best we can accumulate resources to build. Anybody want to plan out other semicircles with different house dimensions?

i kind of like to have space though... my house is on a 3/4 acre lot... so maybe we should space them out a bit in the arc?

Well, brainstorm for me some houses and their dimensions guys and I'll plug the numbers to figure out what it is.

But remember, we're looking at the length almost a football field minus 20 ft on each side separating the far houses, almost, with those measurements.

We can widen the arc, spread the houses further apart, change the shape, change the size of the houses, etc.

And you know what, I'd totally be okay only sharing a house with 1 person or less that I'm not romantically involved with, so if we want to downscale to like 15 or 20 houses that can support 2, I'd be chill. I just realized how much more relaxed it would feel.

I'm thinking in whole integers here, meaning just myself. Then again, we may find a quadriplegic, do they count as half a person?

I would probably prefer smaller houses.  I know it's not traditional commune, where everyone is in one large building, but we're not too conventional anyway (I don't think).

Hmmm.. How about 300 sq ft single-floors for 1-2 persons, built to expand downward if needs be?

I like the idea that lereveur's idea of the 4-8 room house because that could be used to either house multiple individuals, severals couples, or a family or two.

What if we had a mix?  Some smaller houses (individuals/couples, guests) and some larger houses (families, guests, etc).  All built with downward (and outward?) expansion in mind.

I can see the need to larger homes, but I also know that some people (myself included) would value having smaller 1-(2 or 3) person homes.
