lol. Vov, you really need to read "Stranger in a Strange Land." I may not be religious, but I am a bit spiritual. I develop attachments to sentient creatures, esp. those capable of affection, and I think several of us feel the same. I think that's a part of why hunting and fishing was taken up by Zee and Glor so quickly: it's easier and impersonal (correct me if I'm wrong, of course). I am more than okay with people hunting their food, especially when it's necessary to any degree for survival, but raising the damned things simply to be killed seems very, very cruel. Call me a sentimentalist, I guess. Regardless, if we're raising animals for any period of time, there is an extremely significant chance that somebody is going to become very attached to that animal and lots of feelings will be hurt when it's slaughtered, leading to lots and lots of drama.

I agree 100% with LeRev. Hunting is completely fine but raising animals to eat will just cause hurt feelings and problems, and is cruel. Sad

Compromise: barter with local farmers. Agreeable?

Sort of agreeable. I'd wonder if it would be better to, if we HAVE to eat meat that istn hunted, raise it ourselves because there's no chemicals or anything in it and we'd be a lot nicer to the poor thing than most farmers. We could also avoid mad cow disease if there was like, an epidemic.  Shocked

Thing is: we would be raising animals for purposes such as milk or eggs for example.
and then the animal grows old, as they age faster than humans and it either :
a) becomes a waste of our resources as a whole
b) gets eaten and provides some resources.

It's not like work isn't going into this animal, we are raising it, feeding it, taking care of it.
I don't think that the fact that the animal had to die will be lost on us.

Personaly, i find hunting more cruel: if its a farm animal, it can be approached and killed painlessly, rather then potentially shooting it in the foot and having it bleed to death.

lol. Okay, so it would seem nobody has read Heinlein.

In Stranger in a Strange Land, the martian culture had a religion that wasn't a religion at all, it happened to be the truth (thou art god). Part of the culture was also to be eaten by your friends when you die (discorporate): it was the highest honor your friends could bestow upon you. This was partially a part of the culture because food and water were scarcer on mars, lol.

However, I am okay with eating animals dead for natural causes, and I am okay with mercy killings for animals in pain, but that would imply that the animals died because they were sick or in pain, which is probably very unhealthy on some level or another.

And vov, the way I understand it, we should have enough land and enough food to have more than abundant resources, which means that it would be a rare occasion that killing an animal would be at all necessary: food won't be scarce.

This is why we cook meat, and don't eat it raw.
