Post Pets?  Reply with quote
I've mentioned earlier that I wanted to bring pets, though because of the distance I doubt that would happen.

But anyways!

What are your thoughts on having "pets" (ie furry members of the family Smile ) in the commune? On one hand they'd be fun to have around and relieve stress, on the other it'd be extra work to take care of them...and we aren't going to eat them when they die are we? D:

Don't worry we'll accept berrior even if he has hair problems.

I see no problems with pets. Cat's & dogs would help with pest control.

I don't know if I'd be able to survive without rats, but they're low maintenance and eat what I eat. I also will definitely have a sugar glider or two. Rats live 2-3 years and sugar gliders live up to 15 or so.

We should also be aware of allergies, too.

I do have a slight problem living with furries however. Furs are fine and all, but the whole furry movement it so.... Yeah, I don't want to live with it all that much. I'll compromise, but.... no.

yes its simple: pets are like members of the family... YOU DON'T eat them
(... don't they eat dogs in china?)
animals that are raised purely for food, are different...
As much as I would love to bring my cat: cats and dogs eat meat, which we get where?

Have you ever read the ingredients on dry dog food.  It's corn! Cat's and dogs can eat vegetables.

You know, the fun part is how much every thing you said seems arbitrary. What differentiates meat from family? Species? But what if you have a pet cow? Or Christie has chickens and turkeys. lol. If you're going to be raising animals in small numbers, the chances are you're going to bond with them and then they feel like pets, making them feel like family. Only way to go about the whole meat vs. pet thing without being arbitrary and immoral would be to do it on a large, systematic, and impersonal scale. I think we might want to stick with keeping small numbers of animals that have edible biproducts (chickens for their eggs, cows for their milk) as pets. Besides, if one person bonds to an animal, the whole respecting other's thing might come into effect, and killing the animal would be like killing somebody else's pet!

That's so true LeRev. I'm probably going to get attached to the cows and chickens. Sad
