Post Obtaining "Non-Profit" status and the implications  Reply with quote
Does anybody have any information about this? I know if we buy, sell, or use anything we wouldn't be taxable. Can a commune obtain non-profit status, can we exempt ourselves from property taxes somehow, etc.?

HOLY SHIT.

If we have no income,
and then file our taxes,
we'll actually GET money from the government.

My parents have a family of 5, 3 being dependents technically, and make like 18-22000 a year and end up paying 0 taxes.

We should have one person be the "head" and do the paperwork and all 9-19 people be classified as "dependents," preferably the landowner! Very Happy

I know that at the commune directory(there's a link at steal this wiki) they have information on this.  I haven't read it yet but I'll look into it.

lol. I think it would only work if he did it, or at the very least signed it, since it's his land and by living there (and depending on the land) we would technically be "his" dependents.

If somebody else does the paperwork, don't they need a permit or license or something for tax officiation or whatever, like you would need for voter's registration?

Okay, so it looks like we have to front ourself as some other sort of organization.

The easiest of these is a religion, so far as I can tell, unless we directly incorporate the education aspect into our commune as an integral part. But think about it: religion. Oh how fun! But if you look at things like The Church of All Worlds that was originally inspired by Robert Heinrich (a NON-EVIL science-fiction author), it doesn't seem all that bad. We can integrate our philosophy and values into a meaningless ritual and myth and call ourself a religion, so long as in our heart of hearts we don't take ourselves seriously!

lets make a point for the equality of all systems of beliefs and claim pastafarianism.

I got bored for a sec, so I decided to combine Rand, Heinlein, Goldman, and atheism, and these are some religious tenets I thought we could combine into a "Church of Humanity," so we can make "humanitarianism" into something worthwhile.

1.Rejection of belief in any higher or lower power: equality of power in the universe. Exceptions: electromagnetism vs. gravity.

2.Acknowledgement of chain of events-logical or illogical- causing all things.

3. Celebration of the evolution of all things- biological, social, technological, etc.

4.Condemnation of malice and malevolence in all things (to be distinguished from violence with malicious intent and violence with benevolent intent, etc.)

5.Endeavoring to help all benevolent entities thrive rather than simply survive.

6.Promotion of aforementioned evolutions, most importantly biological, social, technological, intellectual, and artistic.

7.Strong emphasis on, and promotion of, being involved on a personal level with any involvement.

8.Negation of property in favor of logic, benevolence, and necessity, especially in regards to other members.

9.Dissolution of gaps and separation between friendly individuals as well as annihilation of intimate separation.

What do you guys think?

Wow.  That's really good!  I'm a little confused on number 2 (causality?  As in, cause and effect?).

I would like to add something about a strong emphasis on the free trade and availability of all things (with possible exceptions, such as obvious implements of malevolence that have no redeeming value: nuclear missiles, as one example.  Non-kitchen knives, as another.  I would advocate teaching martial arts as a defense, rather than trying to use knives.)

Also, a very important thing I think should be included is an acceptance of change in all things.  Change is an inevitable occurrence or process in our lives and to try to ignore or even refute it is futile and just plain stupid.  Rather, we should accept, embrace, and nurture change.  However, going out of our way to make unnecessary change would only prove disastrous in many cases.  Perhaps we should limit the nurturing of change in some way?  This should probably be discussed further.  I guess this kind of ties in with the evolution thing, except that evolution is on a much larger scale, at least in my mind.

I think number 9 could possible use a different wording.  Maybe something about weakening the false importance of the privacy of the self?  Or some such thing.  As in, taking the so-called sexual revolution to where it was supposed to go before the 90's cut it off.

I really like number 7.

I may have more later, as I let these ideas stew inside my head...
