Name

I think this thread is somewhere else, but I can't find it.

Anyway, I was reading one of Daniel Quinn's books, and I got to thinking about our name, Populus Terra.  It means, "Our Land," correct?

Well, my thought was that, in the spirit of starting anew, separate from current society, is it truly our land?  Or is labeling it our land actually incorrect, and we are simply one of many animals inhabiting the land, just as the mice, gophers, deer, and other animals do?

It's not just an issue with the name, it's an entire issue concerning how we view ourselves in relation to the rest of the world.  Are we really above the rest of the animals that inhabit this planet?  Are we really of greater "worth" than the rest of the animals?  Not really.  I think that to succeed in being completely sustainable, we have to change our thinking to incorporate this idea.  We have to take ourselves down a notch in order to separate ourselves from the things we are trying to leave behind.  Otherwise any changes we make to our lives are just window-dressing.
vov35

it means "people's land" (people as in everybody).

seriously. the term "populous" as in population?

What things are we leaving behind?
we are sustaining ourselves, non destructively to the local environment.
But, we are going to be creating a near-modern life.

Are we of greater worth than animals: not really. Don't our plans include returning a large portion of the land to its natural state of being?

what else do you suggest that we incorporate into our plans?

This thread was wove to the archives for the record.

Hot dang now that the name back up on discussion I can bring up some of my names ideas. Anyone for "Professor McConnell's whimsical communist impending environmental apocalypse safe haven"?  any one? Any one?

But seriously, I like the name though I'm not opposed to a change.
vov35

I quite like the current name as well.
Zeerahks

We're leaving behind the lifestyle and way of thinking that is destroying the world.  Unfortunately, agriculture as we know it is in actuality very destructive to the environment; you basically destroy the ecosystem you plant your crops in.

What I'm suggesting that we incorporate is a change in the way we think.  For instance, Vov, you agree that we aren't of greater worth than other members of the planet, but the majority of the world would disagree.  Humans are, after all, meant to rule the world, meant to conquer Nature.  When in reality there is no such thing as Nature (with a capital N), and by "conquering the world" we are destroying it.  So what I think we should do is leave this behind us, and start to think like members of the world, not conquerers.
vov35

so get together with a bunch of people who share your opinions on the world? lol...
Zeerahks

It's not just about finding people who think the same way; it's about showing people that the popular way of thinking that the majority of humans possess is what is leading to the destruction of the us and the world.  It's about showing people this fact, and then showing them a way of thinking that won't destroy us and everything around us.
glorfon

Great great but how does this effect the name?
Zeerahks

Right.  I had thought that the name meant "Our Land."  If we're really equal with the rest of the world, then this name doesn't belong, and is a remnant of modern culture.  However, the name is "Peoples' Land," which, while a little better, still implies that people are a cut above the rest, which we seem to have agreed is not the case.
vov35

damn, populus terra sounded good.  Rolling Eyes

do you have any suggestions then?
Zeerahks

What about just Terra?  Just "The Land."  Not particularly descriptive, I know.

Or, what about Terra Vitae, "Land of life"?
vov35

damn, i got to used to populus terra.

they're both strange. and calling it terra fails. "oh hey lets go live in dirt"
Zeerahks

Terra means "The Land".  Not just Land, and definitely not dirt.  Besides, we are living in the dirt.  We're living in the dirt, around the dirt, and with the dirt.  We'll depend on the dirt for survival.  Not a bad thing, in any way at all.
vov35

... it still sounds retarded  Laughing
Zeerahks

I honestly have nothing to say to that.
UnMeilleurReve

Though it is funny to see that you only say that you have nothing to say, lol.

I think Terra would work, so long as you refer to it as place and not person (it's a common nickname). I just refer to it as the commune when referring to the whole thing. I also try to as much as possible make sure I say our commune, the commune, etc.
vov35

our commune, the commune, in place of?
glorfon

a commune

How about PUALEC Peace, Unity and Love Eco Community
UnMeilleurReve

That sounds just as much fun as saying GSCA (giss-cah, or gay-straight campus alliance). Well, that, and the de-abbreviation sounds very, very fluffy...
glorfon

Yeah, I'm just throwing out names here.

Conclear Terra!
vov35

define conclear.
glorfon

latin for spoon
vov35

... ok, lets do it!
spoonland! wewt!
glorfon

Ok, here's a serious idea.

The Revolution Victory Garden.  Based on of course the victory gardens from WWII.
UnMeilleurReve

I like the potential implications this holds.... And it sounds okay, a bit wordy, but pretty good.
glorfon

Yeah, this was the smoothest sounding version I could come up with.  If you have any variants that sound better they'd be appreciated.
UnMeilleurReve

I've got only one. Since freedom is nothing without liberty, and liberty is what we lack so much, maybe liberty gardens? Or liberation garden?
glorfon

Whoa...

Liberation Garden! We have a winner.  This works so well in all ways.  Liberation applies to our goals in so many ways.  We're liberating our selves from society and we're trying liberate earth from human destruction.  Garden makes us sound less extreme which will make the neighbors less suspicious. Liberation is a good buzz word to pacify patriots.  Plus, it just has good ring to it.
UnMeilleurReve

lol, wow, you made that so much better sounding than when I thought of it! lol

Any other takers?
vov35

I second Liberation Garden.
Zeerahks

"Thirded."  Accepted?
vov35

poll'd? no. accepted? no.

not like that wasn't most of our active members but still.
UnMeilleurReve

Poll'd.
