Getting to know you (again)

Can we have a completely seperate forum for stuff not really related to the site, but for us to get to know eachother? We already have a few pages but it's not a completely new forum, ie one you see in the index page. That way we can just post something like, "look everyone, this is funny" or "anyone want to join me in..."? etc.
glorfon

I suppose so, depending on what every one else thinks.  However I'm usually adverse to off-topic sections because they create the illusion of forum activity while causing less to actually get done.
UnMeilleurReve

I don't see too much harm in it. We do have a shit-ton of activity amongst the active members, and there are more topics than we can keep track of most of the time (the organization of it is driving me insane, but I haven't figured out a way to make it easier or better without nesting it more, and that makes me want to cry, lol).

However, I think it'd be best to keep it as a single thread for random discussion unless something comes up that will be useful for a specific purpose (like meetups).

It also came to mind for me a while ago: has anybody other than myself in these forums been outside of the house, done any hard manual labor, or been homeless or impoverished? I mean, we are kinda putting ourselves in a situation where labor, poverty, lack of amenities, and physical duress will be the order of the day...

Yes, Yes, Does doing 69 in completely naked in an igloo count as homeless?
Selkie

Well...I know Will's on some rough times right now, myself when I was younger (up till like, 7 or 9, cant remember) I lived in a very...hrm, whats the word to describe it. Lots of crime, very very poor, all Mexican and black (we were the only white family I think), and we were pretty poor ourselves. So I don't exactly remember any of it so it doesn't really count...
Zeerahks

I guess I've always been (upper) middle-class.  But unlike most people, I don't take it for granted.  Money, to me, is just pieces of paper and metal (and, I guess, plastic) that some people go apeshit over.

As for hard manual labour, I've helped build a house, and I've gone canoeing in the BWCA a number of times.
Zeerahks

Hmm...interesting update.  I just realized that my ultimate goal in life was (simply Very Happy ) to achieve immortality through the memory of others.  Screw eternal life, screw money, screw mundanity!

Comments?
glorfon

I'll remember you though I might mistake you for Stickarnagy, a member of a runescape forum I use to run.
Zeerahks

Lol. Very Happy
Selkie

Hey guys, sorry Will and I haven't been contributing, we're both busy with trying to get our lives started, there's alot going on and it's stressful xD So don't think we're gone, though if you have  amajor decision or something an email would be helpful Wink

<3 you guys.
UnMeilleurReve

He finally make it to the states???

Ooh dang it's august isn't it.  I need to write up a newsletter.
Zeerahks

Hmm...I am of the opinion that we shouldn't start at 40 people, but rather start at around 10-15 and have the infrastructure to support more.  Rather than charging head first into it with a horde of people.
UnMeilleurReve

"Many hands make light work." Maybe we should take advantage of those who are only partially interested and ask them for volunteer labor to help us get started? Also, if you look at my posts in the food per acre thread, you'll see that we could SUPER-easily house 20 on a single acre.
vov35

you probably miscalculated but ok...
I'd think its more like 5...
UnMeilleurReve

43,560 sq ft per acre

800 sq ft sized base
times
6 such buildings

4,800 sq ft

4 people per house with one house left as a commons
means
24 people

on almost 1/10th of an acre

my math is functional Razz

Going with what the trend seems to be

1-2 people per house
20 person cap
400-600 sq ft per house
needs
10-20 houses

10 houses at 600 sq ft
is
6000 sq ft

20 houses at 600 sq ft
is
12000 sq ft

the latter of which is almost 1/4th of an acre.

Dude, we're sooo set.
vov35

of course, the actual amount of space it will take up is strongly dependent on the radius of the arc/circle we put them in
UnMeilleurReve

I'll go through the effort of refreshing my calc and figuring out the radius of the circle if we figure out the dimensions of any given house. Do we want to go for houses big enough for 1 person and a s/o and plan to house 1 person? Or do we want to plan for expansion and make them big enough for 2 people and s/o's but house 1 person and potential s/o in each?
glorfon

To answer you original question selkie.  If you want to post things that aren't really relevant to the forum either use the profiles/blog section or be vov.
vov35

oh come on, do i really spam that much? plus, does this thread have that much of a set purpose?
glorfon

I was just messing with you vov.  I wouldn't classify the things you say as spam so much as filler.
vov35

I define filler as spam needed to make people think your website has traffic when it really doesn't :p

so what's the current purpose of this thread? can we just post that kind of stuff in it, since it exists?
glorfon

This thread was suppose to be about discussing making an off topic section.
UnMeilleurReve

The irony being how it itself became off-topic...

Anywho, do we want an off-topic section?
And can somebody add me to the blog? unplusreveur I'm pretty sure is my wordpress sn.
Zeerahks

I don't know how to do that... Selkie?
UnMeilleurReve

I'd like to propose that everybody think of something nice to write and say to Selkie, and then we can make a big group email and send it to her (who wants to do the sending). We should include- stuff that doesn't matter, updates from the commune. Post it in here, declare interest in sending, vote for sender, allow majority vote to send?

I declare interest in sending, if we want to do this, lol, and I'll write my something nice soon.

Sound like a plan?
vov35

I declare interest in sending from my spam account
glorfon

Why are we doing this?
UnMeilleurReve

lol, because she said she wanted an email update and it'd be nice, lol. Think of it as a fun community project? It's always nice to be nice.
Selkie

Sorry, I didn't mean to spam Razz No need to go to extra effort guys, I'll try checking in more. Trying to figure out college again, and no Will isn't in the states yet, though if I finally get to go to college (housing troubles) a student loan should get us a place to live...I'll check in a bit more
glorfon

Well, you'll all be getting an E-mail later today anyway.
vov35

*gets pissed at not having recieved it yet*
glorfon

even later vov, I'm lazy and a time zone behind you.
vov35

did you really post that at 2:12 am?
glorfon

Nope the clock on this site is just off and I haven't bothered fixing it.   I think that was about ten last night.
vov35

by the way, the RNC protests got CNN's attention...
Zeerahks

I have a question for the people on the board.

I'm currently in my first semester of my Junior year of college.  Two years in, I've finally realized that I don't belong in college.  I'm already failing my classes (three weeks in, aren't I awesome?), and I can't think of any reason to do better.

What I'd like to do is drop out and do something meaningful.  Vague, isn't it?  Yeah, I know.  But I feel like I should be out doing something, not just sitting here at the college learning things I'm never going to use anyway (I'm a computer science major, but I'm not at all interested in the theory of it; I do, however, absolutely love programming).  I feel like I should become much more active as an activist and an anarchist.  I'd like to travel, touring around the US and Europe, hitchhiking for the most part.  I'd like to concentrate on my martial arts (some dojos offer classes every day, sometimes twice or more each day).

So I'd like to know what you all think.  Ideas?  Comments?  Criticism?  Suggestions?  I'm asking this because, after a lifetime of listening to "college is your only choice," I'm grasping for alternatives and coming up short.
UnMeilleurReve

I was talking to one of my psych professors the other day, and she outright said, "You know, you don't need college, right?" Turns out, she wrote an article for Anarchy! magazine about the inherent oppression in society that forces people to go to college, or at least feel as if they must.

I'm discovering myself that college is largely a place where people go to learn how to grow up. That doesn't really work for me, so I'm treating it as a mostly social experience and doing the bare minimum to get by when it comes to grades, myself. I was considering dropping it, but it gives me an excuse to read a lot more.

My recommendation is, if you know what you want to do or learn, then do it and learn it. If you want to do programming, go out, pick up the books, and put the work into it to learn. If you want to develop any skill, you don't need college: the information is out there in books, conversation, and experience. And if you have something you want to do or a specific goal when it comes to anarchism and activism, I can help you plan and even correspond and help at times (I'm more willing to volunteer whatever services I can). For example, my specific goals are cohesion and solidarity between groups and interests in the leftist political spectrum and to be able to help effectively and meaningfully organize, counsel, and offer an eclectic array of skills. Obviously doing those things doesn't need 8 years of college, but the added benefits of a psych doctorate would make the going a lot easier, I feel.

If you'd like me to give you some people (professors, organizations, etc.) to correspond with and ask questions to or link up with, let me know via pm?
Zeerahks

My main problem is that while I'd like to stay in College for the social aspect of it, my parents have firmly stated (putting it lightly) that they won't pay for me to get C's (which is what I'd get because I don't care about grades as much as learning).

So I think what I'm going to do is issue an ultimatum to them.  Either they continue paying for college or I'm leaving town (they think the only other possibility is getting a full-time job).  I honestly don't know which one would be worse for them.

Anyway, thanks for your support.  I might just take you up on the offer.
vov35

My parents want me to go through a good college and get a PhD and all.

I like learning but school is just fucking retarded.  ... Thought: the reason they make us get up so early for high school is so that we feel like they control our lives. Agree/Disagree?
The only reason I even try at all in school ( I learn much better at home from the internet and documentary tv [its at least more fun to watch then taking notes... what the fuck]...)
is to keep them happy.

Now if i really wanted to convince my parents that college is unnecessary, they would start responding with regular corpgov propaganda bullshit. Can someone help me point out where it is wrong.
UnMeilleurReve

Want me to get you a copy of the Anarchy! Magazine article my psychology professor wrote on why college is a bunch of bullshit?
