Education (Higher and otherwise)

Long story short, I just watched the movie Accepted (again.  What a great movie).  It got me thinking that we may eventually want to do start something similar, both for higher education and possibly for secondary education or even earlier.

I'm going to assume that you've seen Accepted.  If you haven't, Wikipedia has the plot synopsis, or you can watch it.

The following links contain resources and articles about this sort of idea:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unschooling

Unschooling is a difficult thing to describe, but from what I understand about it, it is basically natural learning.  That is, unschoolers, children or otherwise, simply follow their natural curiosity as far as it goes.  All we would have to do is apply that to a learning environment.  We'll need to discuss it more, and possible test out a few ideas ourselves and with others, but I certainly think it'd be possible.

I love unschooling, and accepted is okay. Um, was there any real question to this thread?
Zeerahks

Can we do it?  Can we form a school that has a relative infrastructure to guide higher education or secondary eduction students onto the unschooling path?  Could we create an accredited unschooled college?
glorfon

Yes, yes with time, No not to be negative but I really doubt we could become accredited.

Apparently while I get my Journalism degree I can also slowly work on a degree in education, if that helps at all. Wink

I work well with kids, I'm told, and Will is an excellent teacher (I now understand a lot of advanced physics thanks to him...lol!)

Yes, would be very hard but could be a longterm community goal.
vov35

that would actually be pretty sweet. especially if we got accredited.
A "degree from Populus Terra" actaully sounds pretty serious. But, just how longterm is it?
Zeerahks

Oh, probably 5-10 years at least.
glorfon

I hope that by 5-10 years you mean from when we start not from now.
Zeerahks

Yes, I do.
vov35

you'll all be older by then. i am curious at the next generation of members...
like most of us will still be there, but, there will be more members at some point.

I'll be a doctor in psychology in several years from now, and I'll be qualified at that point to teach on a graduate and post-graduate level to some degree. I'll also have information on organizational methods and strategies as well as trauma advocacy. Smile

I think it's possible and we should go for it, but the first step is to look into an accreditation association for the subjects we're going to teach (meaning we need to outline those first) and see what the accreditation requirements are.

Also, on a private school level, we should be even better off Smile
Zeerahks

Personally, I think that the things taught should be practical skills, not the traditional theoretical learning.
UnMeilleurReve

When it comes to things like psychology, engineering, and various other things, the learning is an application process.
vov35

how so in psychology?
