Any of you heard of HHO gas?
I know most if not all have heard of Wind generators and solar panels, but what about solar heat and solar cooking?
Hydro generators also.
also geothermal heat and cooling.

All of if mot most of these these "generators" can be DIY.

you don't gain energy that way.

woo parabolic mirrors. -.-

We don't have a river

Do you honestly think we have a geothermal vent in those 26 acres?

I had a thought.

Can we find a chemical compound whose boiling point is *well* below the ground temperature deep underground in our area? Then you treat it like a steam engine of some sort and slowly build up charges in capacitors to use for electricity for small electronics like CFLs, etc.

@ Vov & Yur:  lolz  Very Happy   Good ideas, but unfortunately our location doesn't allow them.  Oh, and since we're largely anarchic here, if you want to make a pass at a "throne", be my guest.  No assurances that I'll follow though.  Wink

@ UnReve (grr... long names! Very Happy ):

You have to go really far down to get core heat high enough to boil ... well, anything:  Nevada Ground Temps

seriously now alternative energy are more cost effective. there are communes that make their own bio diesel and fertiliser etc. (wow i sometimes can't spell worth a hootinnanny)

bicycles that generate power or some other inventive machine.

did i fail to mention i'm a computer consultant and i work on and with computers daily for the past 10 years and i've used a computer for the past what 20 years.
in no way am i saying remove computers from our lives. I'm really saying lets be real about building a great foundation for something that can and will flourish ... hmm mwait has already look at this forum alot of messages from what seems to be fro mpeople that care about something.

P.S. i appoligize for where my messages get placed i mean under the wrong topic etc. i'll try harder to better place them.  Thanks for not ejecting them.

if we were to find a substance with a sufficiently low boiling point, wouldn't parabolic mirrors be a much better alternative? then pass that through a turbine.

*eventually returns to a common solar power plant through various optimizations*

it is a good design tho, just run water through pipes with sunlight focused onto them... water boils, spins turbine, draw power from that.

Okay, I'm really, really liking the parabolic mirrors. We have the problem though that the material we have the mirror focus on (and we need to have something to adjust the mirror's positioning for maximum efficiency) has to not melt or breakdown at a high rate while still having the strength enough to maintain pressure. But with a 10 on the UV scale (meaning almost no UV protection) throughout the year and little to no cloud cover for most of the year as well, focusing sunlight sounds like a good plan.

May I just mention that making a device to operate on steam power puts the word "steampunk" straight into my head?

As for something that boils that low, I used to know of a few substances that boiled at room temperature, the problem that I neglected to remember is that if any of it escapes the device (which I'm assuming it will to make the device operate, but if there were a way to make it a closed-system....) we have something significantly more expensive to replace than water. Ah well.

As for the need for energy, if we go earth-bermed (and *especially* if we go earth-sheltered), we cut our energy consumption to so very little that running a few computers would be worthwhile.

@chardonnay: I agree about the good foundation, and I think that if we build up enough material and capital to start off running with high-quality and well-planned facilities, it'll last even longer, and if we figure out a way to make it all more cost-effective and material-efficient (possibly at the commune as a communal project), it makes our efforts last longer. Btw, welcome to the forums.

@Zee: you could just put @Reve (reve with an accent means "dream") or @Reveur (which means dreamer). Wink
