I just realized that we have to find out the building codes of the city, county, and state, AND pay for an inspector to come by periodically and check on our progress for anything we do. Anybody have any idea what the codes are?

No, but I know where to find out http://www.tamacounty.org/

Of coarse I have no intent to follow any of the codes unless we have non for profit status.  Which is another thing I should look into.  Damn I've been lazy.

ok seriously:
i duno, i just think that they don't need to know about our expansion.
show them the original complex, and deny ever building onto it.

I found a PDF file called Building Code Official's Handbook
Basically, an architect is required to design the structure of the buildings, unless:
"Notwithstanding the other provisions of this chapter, persons who are not registered
architects may perform planning and design services in connection with any of the
following:
1. Detached residential buildings containing twelve or fewer family dwelling units of not
more than three stories and outbuildings in connection with the buildings.
2. Buildings used primarily for agricultural purposes including grain elevators and feed
mills."

So, if we can prove that we are 1 or 2 we're alright in that sense. Although, I am not sure about the term "family dwelling units". Assuming that the average family consists of 4 people, correct me if I'm wrong, this means that you have 3 bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom, livingroom.
So we'd be allowed to have 36 bedrooms. Or do they mean that we can have 12 seprate dwellings?
How vague...
This may seem like I am going into too much detail, but knowing the system, they will try to catch us on any violation. And if we indend to have construction going on, I doubt that it will go unnoticed and that we'll be left alone to our own designs.

edit: i'll continue to study this 'handbook'. seems like something that should be looked into. I'd call and ask for general building codes, but long distance is a bitch, and my parents would become interested in why on earth I'm calling Iowa.

Well each of our earth sheltered homes will be a detached residential buildings and our green houses will be for agricultural purposes and our underground commons area...

....won't exist

My mom knows about the commune so I could try calling the Tama county commissioner some time or emailing them.
