Post Hobbit houses  Reply with quote
That's the best way I can summarize it.  Partially underground houses built into hills.  This composite of underground an above ground living has some major advantages. Here's what I can come up with.

1. Sunlight! We can have windows along the south side.  Iowa is north enough that the sun is always slightly to the south so having south facing windows will keep the building warm and well lit.
2. Still well insulated! If we put a foot or so on every side but the south. The building will still hold in heat fairly well.
3.Aesthetic qualities! Not that important but houses like this look really pretty
4. Plantable roof!
5.  If there's a cave in it would be less catastrophic.
6. Easier to engineer.
7. Ventilation no longer an issue.
8.  And we could still have vast underground storage.

Any questions/concerns?

These are called earth bermed houses: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_sheltering

You can even do it without hills, by digging large basements and using the displaced earth from that.

Hobbit is spelled with two b's (wow, I am such a nerd).  Don't mind me, I'm just being a smart-ass.

there, I corrected it.

Spelling aside does this seem like something we could agree on?

Well, Iowa doesn't actually have hills but like Z said we can pile up the dirt we dig up around the out side.

Actually, Iowa is a pretty hilly place...it's Nebraska that is flat.

*sigh* Goodbye Zeppelin dreams...

Also, in the 70's a book with the title "40 Modern Communes" came out. It outlined commune startings, functionings, and reasons for failure. Anybody know anything about it?
